With the project "Zeespiegel" (translated directly from Dutch, sea mirror, means the vertical elevation level of water), I invite people to experience the sea level.

The connection in which the stones are laid refers to the traditional European pavements. This is as a metaphor for the once dry ground and rich/long history of land reclamation and water management.

A brick also symbolises social engineering, optimism for coming up with new forms to rise above ourselves.

26% of the Netherlands lies below sea level

NAP and 59% of the Dutch land surface

is susceptible to flooding. The location of the Netherlands in Northwest Europe on the North Sea has shaped the country over the centuries. The struggle against water for land has, in turn, shaped the Dutch.
